Klapton Reinsurance Limited

Klapton Reinsurance Limited (“Klapton Re”) was incorporated in Zambia and is a fully regulated reinsurance company (by the PIA). It was established to provide reinsurance services to complement other insurers and reinsurers in Zambia, Africa, the Middle East and beyond. The company was established in Zambia after identifying the need to provide local reinsurance support and has positioned itself for regional engagements and related business investments.

Klapton Re employs local people (with a current fully functioning company of twenty staff) and increases the local industry’s financial capacity to retain more risk locally. Their uniqueness is the strategic linkage with an existing network of regional brokerage hubs that support the Zambian operation by bringing in global reinsurance business. It is of significant value to the Zambian market as it attracts liquidity in the market.

Klapton provides quality solutions to our customers, brokers, insureds, and re-insureds with a wide range of insurance and reinsurance products, including core activity lines, commercial (SME, Contractors & Engineering) and inward facultative reinsurance covers.

Klapton Re receives direct placements from local, regional, and international insurance companies and reinsurance brokers with their head office in Lusaka. Klapton Re also maintains a presence in Africa via its regional hubs.

Klapton Reinsurance Brokers Limited

Klapton Reinsurance Brokers Ltd is a licensed insurance and reinsurance broker formed in 2019 and operated from Nairobi, Kenya. It facilitates business via several brokers and direct cedants across Anglophone countries (East, Central and southern Africa). It is run by Chris Kiragu (MD) and currently employs seven further full-time staff.

The company primarily places:

Facultative reinsurance
Treaty reinsurance
A range of sureties/guarantee products which can be tailored to meet clients’ need.

Klapton Management Africa SARL

Klapton Management Africa Sarl (KMA) is a licensed reinsurance broker formed in 2018 and operated from Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire and facilitates business via several brokers and cedants in the Francophone countries (North, West, CIMA Zone Africa).

Using the African Franc (8 countries are using the West African Franc – XOF and 6 countries are using the Central African Franc – XAF). KMA has a full operative team, run by Abid Ziadi, with a further six full-time staff.

KMA’s vision is to establish the reinsurance broker as an essential partner in the French-speaking African insurance/reinsurance markets

The company primarily carries out the following activities:

Facultative reinsurance
Reinsurance under the terms of the treaty
A limited range of sureties/guarantee products, which can be tailored to meet clients’ needs

SLA Capital Limited is a 100% subsidiary of the UK Holding Company, incorporated in Kenya, as an investment vehicle for the Anglophone Africa market.

Michael Lawson

CEO & DIRECTOR

Michael Lawson is a qualified accountant and an associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. He began his career in 1990 and has over 30 years of financial services experience, working in multiple areas of Structure Finance, including Commercial Banking Finance and Structured Corporate Finance.

He has held multiple senior positions in multinational banks including Lloyds Bank, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein and Sanwa International, including the Head of Finance at Lloyds Corporate for Capital Markets and Head of Strategy in a sales and distribution role.

Ian Atkinson

NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Ian Atkinson is a very experienced corporate banker with more than 35 years of experience that has seen him manage through at least four credit cycles. Areas of particular expertise are in large asset and trade finance as well as bond and treasury product use. Through rising levels of responsibility and accountability, Ian has managed, on a portfolio basis, lending, principally in the multi-jurisdictional arena of shipping and trade finance books, exceeding $20 billion in value. This included loan performance management, restructuring, enforcement and asset disposal.

For the last six years, Ian has been the Head of Fraud and Financial Crime Governance and Advisory and an Executive Member of the Lloyds Banking Group Corporate Compliance function.

In this last role, Ian had specific accountability in relation to the establishment and maintenance of the risk management framework for Financial Crime in the Commercial Bank and Enterprise-Wide responsibilities in respect of all risks as they affected the Commercial Bank as part of the Executive.

Ian is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland and holds a Masters Degree in International Banking and Finance from Heriot Watt University.

Paul Greig

NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Paul Greig is a seasoned banking professional with 30 years’ experience in the industry. He is the former Head of Lloyds Banking Group’s Structured Finance and Transportation portfolio, having previously held senior leadership positions, both in the UK and the US, in Bank of Scotland’s Aviation, Project Finance, Oil & Gas and UK Corporate divisions and possesses an MA (Honours) from Edinburgh University.

Paul was instrumental in developing the Bank’s Project Finance business in both the UK and New York, as well as its Oil & Gas portfolio in Houston. Paul has significant experience in various jurisdictions covering business development, portfolio management, workout and asset disposal activities.

Paul is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland and Managing Director of GGY Consultancy Limited.
